With the exception of the Legend, and occasionally Data Labels, I recommend that you only use the labels presented here rarely. If something like this is necessary, I much rather prefer to use text boxes, as you’ll see in later examples. This is mainly because you can format these objects in a better-designed way, edit them better, and position them more easily. Chart Title The chart title (identified by the number 5 in Figure 1-27) should provide clear information about what’s illustrated in the chart.

Basic Approach 35 Note Those of you, who for years were used to double-clicking to open the relevant formatting dialog boxes for individual elements of a chart, will now find it a little difficult to learn that this double-click action no longer works in this way. n A single click will always be sufficient to activate chart tools for further access to data, unless you’ve executed other actions beforehand in the table area of the worksheet. Give one or the other method a try and feel free to carry out very different experiments.

In Chapter 3, “Perceiving, Interpreting, Understanding,” you will find recommendations for using the different types for different purposes. Experienced Excel users will quickly realize that, unfortunately, expectations for a wider choice of chart types have not been met. The few enhancements in the area of subtypes are so impractical they can’t be considered innovations. Therefore, the familiar range that has been available for years basically remains in use. However, we’ll show in later chapters that this in no way prevents you from using the charts in a huge number of ways.
